"Remember Me" Review by The Blurb
***SPOILER***
At last — an intelligent romantic drama
You have to give credit to a film which starts powerfully and grabs you by the eyeballs. That’s certainly the case here. A dramatic sequence with striking camera angles and lighting makes an instant impression and sets the mood for this gritty romance about two dysfunctional families. Aided by strong acting and an intelligent script, Remember Me is a cut above most romantic films.
Tyler Hawkins (Robert Pattinson) a rebel looking for a cause has a difficult relationship with his estranged high flying father (Pierce Brosnan). Street-hardened cop Sgt. Neil Craig’s (Chris Cooper) wife was shot dead by hoodlums in front of his young daughter ten years previously. Craig in recent times has become over protective.
When Tyler and his best mate Aidan (Tate Ellington) get involved in a street brawl they’re arrested by Craig. By coincidence, Craigs’s daughter Ally (Emilie de Ravin) attends the same college as Tyler and he’s encouraged by Aidan to make out with her in order to get back at the rough handling he experienced from her dad. In a sub-plot, Tyler’s young sister Caroline (Ruby Jerins), something of a romantic dreamer, is set upon at a party. Tyler is outraged by this and his father’s apparent indifference to Caroline’s success as a budding artist.
Tyler and Ally actually fall in love but their happiness is short-lived as family pressures and secrets create an untenable situation threatening their relationship. Things are suddenly brought to a head in an unexpected and devastating conclusion; the moral being to make the most of every day.
Director Allen Coulter, whose previous feature was Hollywoodland as well as episodes of The Sopranos, lovingly crafts a picture of New York at in important time in its history. He’s clearly comfortable with his actors and gains excellent performances. Credit must go to Will Fetters’ script with its layers of meaning and convincing dialogue. Cinematography makes use of colour to suit the mood, with impressive camerawork.
At the risk of getting abusive mail, I have to confess I’m not a great fan of Robert Pattinson (Twilight) in his limp vampire outings. He’s on his mettle here, with a touch of the young Marlon Brando and a sense of being real. You should applaud a good performance as this one deserves. His intimate scenes with the curvaceous Emilie de Ravin (Public Enemies) have that elusive electric tingle, their lovemaking captured sympathetically rather than bordering on the pornographic. The shower sequence is a good example. They make one of the screen’s more pleasing romantic couplings.
Chris Cooper (The Kingdom) puts in a sensitive performance with depth as the tough but heartbroken cop. This reliable actor seems to fall into roles that suit him. It’s good to see Pierce Brosnan (Mamma Mia!) in serious mode for a change, doing much to confirm his status as a fine actor. A surprise packet is young Ruby Jerins (Shutter Island) as Caroline, she’s just a charmer and steals her scenes right out from under her co-stars. Tate Ellington (The Invention of Lying) provides a level of comic relief as Tyler’s close friend, while Lena Olin (The Reader) emotionally captures his grieving mother who lost her other son to suicide.
Remember Me may remembered after other romantic movies are forgotten for its compelling performances and intriguing script. It certainly surprised this reviewer, as I was expecting much less. Be warned — the shock twist at the end is a gut punch.

As all this by-now-familiar madness surrounded Robert Pattinson on the New York City set of "Remember Me" last year, co-star Pierce Brosnan couldn't help but want to shield his fellow actor.

Eclipse Trailer Showing Before Remember Me March 12th
The debut continues a trend of RPattz cross promotion that began when the trailer for "Remember Me" debuted before the November release of "New Moon." Summit seems to be hoping the magic hype circle will work again, drawing "Twilight" fans to the theater to see Pattinson romance Emilie de Ravin and to catch their first glimpse of the third movie (unless, of course, it leaks onto the Internet ahead of time).
This might be Summit's smartest theatrical trailer release yet, considering that in 2008, the "Twilight" trailer debuted before the Warner Bros. superhero flick "Speed Racer," while this past year the "New Moon" trailer was shown before the Summit-helmed slasher "Sorority Row."
On the other hand, those films, whose genres didn't exactly match up, might have exposed to the saga while drawing Twilighters to the action and horror pics to catch the trailers. We assume die-hard Team Edward members were already planning to see Pattinson's new romantic drama.

Robert Pattinson...Remember Me...Behind the Scenes Video
A new, behind-the-scenes video of Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin's Remember Me was revealed last night on Yahoo!
The video shows a few clips from the film, but it also offers both commentary on the film and Robert Pattinson's work in it.
"He's a young guy who's a little bit lost. He meets this girl," Pattinson explains.
"Their relationship is so beautifully formed and so realistic," de Ravin says.
"She shows him how to live and how to mature, and not so much just being attracted to eachother, but knowing eachother and how important that is to actually find somebody you can really know."
"The movie revolves around that," de Ravin concludes.
"He has a very watchable, likeable intensity to him," Pierce Brosnan says of Robert Pattinson's performance.
"But he also brought all these intricate details to this character," de Ravin adds.
"He embodied this guy who's filled with complexity," director Allen Coulter says of his performance.
"Boy, was this tailor-made for him, Robert can deliver that sensitivity," Chris Cooper says.
Less than a month to go until Remember Me hits theaters!
New Remember Me Clip...Arguement Over Dessert
Sure it's still a month away from release, but with Valentine's Day this weekend the buzz for Robert Pattinson's new romantic drama "Remember Me" is hitting full bloom. MySpace has an exclusive clip from the film (see it after the jump!) featuring Rob and his leading lady Emilie de Ravin as they place their orders at an Indian restaurant, and we're liking Emilie's character Ally's take on life.
"I just don't see the point in waiting," Ally says after she orders her maple ice cream dessert before her lamb dish, and we have a feeling that that's going to be a recurring philosophy for her during the film.
From the trailer and pictures we've seen of the film so far it seems like Emilie and Rob have great chemistry, but this scene between Ally and his character, Tyler, seems to cement that fact. They have a great rapport back and forth which leads us to hope that Rob won't deliver his lines as awkwardly in the film as he did in the clip's intro. And, after hearing only Emilie's Australian accent for so long on "Lost," it's nice to hear her take a stab at an American one.
"What if I die eating my vindoo? I'd die without having eaten the one thing I wanted most," Ally explains about her dinner situation to an amused Tyler. "Guarantee me — swear to me on your eternal soul — that I make it to my entree, and I'll wait. If I die, you'll have to live the rest of your life knowing not only did you lie to me, but you denied me of my one last indulgence. My last wish. Are you prepared to shoulder that kind of responsibility for it?"
The clip ends with Tyler laughing after Ally's explanation, but we're guessing Ally ends up eating her dessert before dinner. It seems like Ally has a way of getting what she wants, and her artful act of persuasion has a lot to do with it. I think we all have a thing or two to learn from the dessert-before-dinner guilt-trip argument.

Robert Pattinson says role as Tyler "Just Different"
In March, Robert Pattinson will be hitting the big screen in the romantic drama "Remember Me." Pattinson steps out of the shadow of his brooding "Twilight" character Edward Cullen to play Tyler, a slightly misguided college student who's dealing with a family tragedy when he falls in love with a young woman, Ally, played by Emilie de Ravin.
In a new video posted on the film's Facebook page, Pattinson discusses his decision to tackle the role of the rebellious New York youth. "Initially, I remember reading the script and thinking ... um ... I like the flow of the dialogue and stuff," he said. "It was just different."
Pattinson, who will later this year reprise his role as Edward in "Eclipse," added that Tyler had a certain "it" factor about him that he hadn't seen in many other leading male roles in current films. "It seems like in a lot of ways main characters in other movies, when there is a young guy who is the lead he always seems like a vessel, [he] always [has] to be so naive and ridiculously innocent so the audience can feel that with [him] in the story," he explained. "Tyler didn't feel like that. He was a very specific character."
In a recent chat with MTV News, de Ravin spoke about her instant connection with Pattinson. "I flew to New York to test with Rob and we immediately got along and had instant great chemistry, which is not an easy thing to come by," she said. "Obviously you're acting, but you want to have that connection with somebody. We had it."

But as the actress made clear in an interview with MTV News, she's taking it all in stride. For playing it so cool, and for the stellar year she's about to have, we're honoring de Ravin as one of our 10 to Watch in 2010 — the folks in the movie industry we expect big things from in the next 12 months. In a wide-ranging conversation, de Ravin gave us tantalizing hints about "Lost," described dealing with the insane attention surrounding "Remember Me" and said she instantly connected with Pattinson when the pair first met.
MTV: You're returning to a TV show everyone is obsessed with, you're co-starring opposite one of the biggest actors on the planet — does 2010 feel like it's going to be a really big year for you?
Emilie de Ravin: Yeah, I'm insanely excited. The show's been fantastic, and I had season five off, so I had the opportunity to do some other projects, including "Remember Me." Being surrounded by all these talented groups of people inspires you so much. And with the show ending, it's bittersweet — sad, but fantastic they're ending on a high note. You don't want to be the last ones left at the party!
MTV: So how did "Remember Me" come your way? Did you have to read with Rob?
De Ravin: They'd been looking to cast my role for a while, looking at a lot of different girls. I read the script three weeks before they started shooting. I flew to New York to test with Rob and we immediately got along and had instant great chemistry, which is not an easy thing to come by. Obviously you're acting, but you want to have that connection with somebody. We had it. And I was thrown into a wardrobe fitting that same day.
MTV: Before you were cast, did you have a sense of all the craziness that surrounds Rob everywhere he goes?
De Ravin: I suppose I did, but it was not something I thought about until I got to set that first day and was like, "Ooooh, OK." Probably 90 percent of the film we shot on location, mainly in Manhattan, and having the paparazzi and fans coming to watch, it adds, um, another element. You have to focus much more.
MTV: Was it just nuts?
De Ravin: There were a lot of crazy moments where you're filming on location and you're waiting for people to get out of the shot. People don't want to move. Rob and I would laugh about that. There was a scene where we're on a date at a carnival, and it was very exposed to media, paparazzi and fans. We were rehearsing, and you become so self-conscious of people watching you, and we both stopped and looked at each other and were like, "Wait, what are we doing?" You're taken out of your work mentality with hundreds of people watching you when you're just trying to figure out your scene.
MTV: What was your relationship with Rob like off-camera?
De Ravin: It was so great being able to work with someone you immediately get along with and is incredibly talented and is driven to make the film as good as we can. Having someone you can go and talk with about a scene, and it's all very casual and easy, that made filming such a delight — having a friendship level and a commitment to the script. The way Rob and I developed our relationship onscreen was very natural, and just seeing what happened with scenes, what happens in the moment.
MTV: But you're telling me you guys didn't watch "Twilight" together in your trailer every day?
De Ravin: No! I hadn't seen the films prior to shooting. They're great. They're such a different genre to this film. "Twilight" and "Remember Me" couldn't be more different. Not so many similarities between Edward Cullen and Tyler.
MTV: So you play Ally, a college student who falls for Pattinson's Tyler. Tell me a bit about the relationship between these two characters.
De Ravin: The relationship between Ally and Tyler is so beautifully developed. It's such an honest, organic, real love story. It's not your typical Hollywood love story. Neither one of them were really looking for it, but it just happened. Obviously there's a physical attraction, but also that thing you can't put into words. They're brought together in very random circumstances. It's not love at first sight, but they're intrigued at first sight. They've both had major family tragedies that, prior to their relationship, have closed them off, thinking no one can understand the way they really feel. They just get each other. There's no false performance. It's all open and who they are. That's sometimes beautiful and sometimes ugly and sometimes frustrating, but it's all on the table."
